Opportunities for Giving
Gift of Dharma The Dharma was established in Tibet in the ninth century through the kindness of great benefactors. Teachers, translators, monks, nuns and yogis were supported by generous offerings. As the Dharma is transplanted to the West, there are some wonderful traditions we can emulate. One such tradition is that of generosity. We invite you to follow the age-old example of a patron who makes the Dharma available for the benefit of others. The Gift of Dharma Program offers the opportunity for you to gift family, friends, colleagues and clients with sponsorship of Rangjung Yeshe Gomde’s vitally important mission, providing both you and them with the honor of bringing the Dharma to the West. There is no better gift than that! Please make checks payable to Chokling Tersar Foundation, and mail to: Planned Giving The best gift plans benefit not only Gomde -- they also improve the donor's financial and tax situation, often right away. Take a moment to explore the opportunities for creative giving and see how your philanthropic act can fulfill your own financial and tax-planning needs. Time-honored ways of giving include:
Tax Savings from Current Giving In making a gift, if you were to sell your stock or real estate and use the proceeds as your donation, you would be forfeiting a hefty amount in capital gains tax on the appreciation of your property. By donating the property itself -- rather than the proceeds from the sale of that property -- you can avoid capital gains tax altogether, creating a substantial cash savings. Because the full value of the stock or property will be available to use as a gift, the value of the charitable deduction you can claim against your income taxes will be much higher. Furthermore, the transfer is not subject to gift tax, and the gift reduces your taxable estate, which reduces your estate taxes. Tax Savings from Deferred Giving 'Deferred giving' means that you donate an asset today to receive income and tax benefits, while the actual transfer of the asset is deferred for a period of time, often your lifetime (and that of a surviving beneficiary, if you wish). Some of the ways you can benefit through a deferred gift:
Each individual situation is unique. We would be happy to assist you, your attorney, and/or your tax advisor in finding the best plan for you. Please contact us at adminassist@gomdeusa.org.
