Thangkas and Statues
Ratna Shop offers support for the Vajrayana practice. Our selections of statuary and thangkas reflect the specific practices of the Nyingma and Kagyu lineages of our gurus. Each year's selection represents general Buddhist philosophy like the Wheel of Life thangka or Shakyamuni statuary. Traditional representations of principle deities, yidams, and dakinis common to both Nyingma and Kagyu traditions, as well as Guru Rinpoche, Vajrasattva, and Chenrezig, are consistently available. We also feature images especially honored by the practice of the lamas who teach at Rangjung Yeshe Gomde each summer.
Please scroll through our offerings to see images significant to our practices. These works are currently in stock at Rangjung Yeshe Gomde's Ratna Shop, and can be seen by seminar attendees. Other works arrive each year from Nepal. Each piece is unique, so if you have a strong interest in a particular item, please contact Ani Marcia at ratnashop@gomdeusa.org to discuss or place on hold. Prices do not include tax or shipping. Universally Practiced Deities Please see 'Practice Texts' on this website for the Shakyamuni sadhana "Treasury of Blessings'. Back to Top Trikaya Deities “You can ultimately say that recognizing the nature of mind is the real guru yoga. By bringing to mind the symbolic guru in the form of an image or a living person, one can realize the real guru, which is compassionate emptiness, within one’s mind.” -- Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche, "Teachings on the Preliminary Practices” (See Practice Texts for Ngondro and Guru Yoga practices.) The Buddha of Boundless Light is the pure expression of the wisdom of discriminating awareness, which transmutes the poison of attachment and desire. In the Trikaya Guru formulation, Amitabha represents the Dharmakaya. In the Tsok Feast Offering, he gathers the essences of samsara and nirvana, conferring longevity for the sake of oneself. The Buddha of Limitless Life is the samboghakaya form of Amitabha and the focus of the long life and health practices. He is adorned with jewels and elaborate gowns, unlike the simpler attire of Amitabha. Tsikey Chokling Rinpoche gave the empowerment for the practice of Red Amitayus August 25-27, 2006 at Gomde. Amitayus Yabyum statue - Unusual 4" statue of Amitayus with consort. Full gold plate. Amitayus statue - 6", full gold plate. Chenrezig, also known as Avalokiteshvara, embodies the compassion of the Buddha, the Noble Tamer of Beings. Chenrezig is the Sambhogakaya aspect of the Trikaya Guru. Chenrezig - single form, with soft-colored rainbows radiating from the halo. Modern palette. 1,000-arm Avalokiteshvara - large, all gold, with the five Buddhas forming a canopy above, Manjushri and Heruka in the lower corners. $475 Guru Rinpoche is the embodiment of Buddha Nature, the nature of the mind. Trikaya Guru thangka in the Chokling Tersar tradition - large. Single form of Guru Rinpoche thangka - holding the vajra close to his heart in the style of the Chokling Tersar and Khyentse traditions. Deities of the Highest Yoga Tantras Several deities are associated with the Highest Yoga Tantras of Mahamudra and Dzogchen. Vajradhara,“Bearer of the Thunderbolt” is the primordial Buddha, synonymous with the Dharmakaya. As the transmitter of the Vajrayana teachings to Tilopa, he is central to the Kagyu lineage. He is the Tantric form of Shakyamuni and embodies the primordial awakened mind.
Samantabhadra (Tibetan: Kuntuzangpo) is the primordial Buddha associated with compassion and the Dzogchen peaceful and wrathful teachings (Shitro). It is said at the beginning Samantrabhadra saw the separation of “I” and “Others” and was not fooled like everyone else. He is the antecedent of all and the expanse of reality. A smaller version (not shown) is $310. Ekajati, Za Rahula, and Dorje Lekpa are the supreme protectors of the Dzogchen teachings. The supplication for their aid is seen in “The Inexhaustible Garland of Lightning,” in the General Chants for the Chokling Tersar (see Practice Texts). Vajra Kumara: Enlightened Activity Vajra Kumara is also known as Vajrakilaya or Dorje Phurba. Please see Practice Texts for the ‘Sadhana of the Single Form of Vajrakilaya’ arranged by Tulku Urgyen and the ‘Quintessential Sphere of Activity’, the tsok offering for Vajrakilaya, arranged by Jamgön Kongtrül. Dorje Phurba and consort thangka - frightening but awesome couple in dark blues on a black background. Fine gold etchings outline the figures. A garuda sits above them in the flames. Unlike the Vajrakilaya described above, the consort holds a trident in her left hand. A bright red brocade border makes this thangka especially dramatic. Dorje Phurba and consort thangka - smaller thangka with the implements of Dorje Phurba. The couple is in medium blues surrounded by orange gold flames, while the thangka as a whole is in a modern palette. $195 Tara represents virtuous and enlightened activity. It is said that when Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion, looked upon the misery of the world he shed tears of compassion, and from the pool of these tears Tara was born to help him. Tara manifests in twenty-one forms. The Green and White Taras are especially dear to several of our teachers: Tsikey Chokling, Dzongsar Khyentse, and Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoches. Green Tara belongs to the Karma family of unobstructed compassionate activity, symbolized by her green color and is the wisdom consort of the Buddha Amoghasiddhi. In a previous aeon, she took the vow to only incarnate in female form in order to ceaselessly protect beings from the fears of samsaric life and to guide them upon the path of enlightenment. Instructions for the practice of Green Tara in all three vehicles is found in “The Essential Instruction on the Threefold Excellence: The Profound Essence of Tara,” by Chogyur Dechen Lingpa (see Practice Texts). Green Tara thangka - Large, simple but elegant background in modern palette, dark blue frame. $290 White Tara bestows the gifts of longevity and diligence and is an elegant emanation. She is pictured sitting in a full lotus, belonging to the Lotus Family of Amitabha. She has seven eyes: two on the soles of her feet, two on the palms of her hands, two on her face, and one in the "third eye" position on her forehead. Considered an effective means of eliminating life's difficulties and increasing one's life span, the merit accrued through White Tara practice is also especially great. An audiotape of a teaching by Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche on this practice can be found at www.siddharthasintent.org. White Tara thangka - Large, finely detailed gown, blue border. $185 White Tara thangka - Large, simple but elegant background in a modern palette that is highlighted by a gold and white brocade frame. $280 White Tara statue - 8", full gold plate. $310
Mahakala is the wrathful deity that destroys mind chatter and brings our minds back into attentive focus. The four-armed Mahakala is a protector of the Drikung Kagyu. As the seventh incarnation of the Kagyu lama Gar Drichen, Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche is said to be an emanation of Four-Armed Mahakala. Zambhala is the deity of wealth, appropriately a member of the Ratna or Jewel Buddha family in nirmanakaya form. His flaming wish-fulfilling jewel is symbolic of the riches one attains with the wealth of spirituality. Tsikey Chokling Rinpoche gave the empowerment for the practice of Zambhala August 25-27, 2006 at Gomde (see Programs.) Zambhala thangka - White form, holding the mongoose spitting out jewels and wearing an elegant set of robes. $325 Troma Nagmo, the Black Dakini, embodies the wrathfully compassionate nature of primordial wisdom. Troma Nagmo is a wrathful form of Vajrayogini. With great splendor of original nature, she suppresses demonic force with the intensity of her compassions. In particular, she is an exponent of the Chod lineage with an emphasis on severance, cutting all extremes. The practice of chod is considered a most profound method for cutting through the ego and its subsequent ignorance. Troma thangka - Troma Nagmo holding a trident and knife. Exquisite gold outlines and detail on black green background. She looks to the side in a piece with a burgundy border. Kurukulla: She is an aspect of Tara, representing the perception of enlightened power overwhelming and overpowering all dualistic perception. This binds and resolves it into the unity of pure enlightened perception and experience. She is red in color and her primary symbol is a drawn bow and arrow that causes ordinary perception to be gathered and to pierce the experience of the unity of primordial pure nature. Kurukulla thangka - large. This semi-wrathful Kurukulla is a bright red figure wearing a garland of freshly severed heads. The bow is covered with flowers. Dark blue silk frame. Dorje Phagmo (Vajravarahi) thangka - The main yidam of the Kagyu tradition, this large thangka shows her semi-wrathful figure dancing on a small sun disk. She is bright red, wearing a garland of freshly severed heads and flowers. $425 Dorje Drolo Karma Pakshi - The wrathful protector form of Padmasambhava, as envisioned by Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche. Fine detail with a modern palette. Milarepa is a famed yogi of the Kagyu lineage, as well as one of the most famous yogis and poets in Tibetan history. Most of the teachings of the Kagyu schools passed through him. He was the main disciple of Marpa the translator. Longchenpa is recognized as one of the main manifestations of Manjushri. He was a principal teacher of the Nyingma school and an important link in the transmission of the Dzogchen lineage, uniting Kagyu and Nyingma traditions. Siwaar Vakar - Chogyam Trungpa’s vision of Gersar of Ling, the Hero of Tibet. Longer and narrower than most thangkas to accommodate the figures. Very detailed, in beautiful colors.
